Abstract<\/strong>: Timor-Leste is one of the youngest States of the twenty-first century. It was a Portuguese colony, occupied by Indonesia, the stage of United Nations interventions, and since its restoration of independence, it has been undergoing the process of state- and nation-building. The sea is important for Timor-Leste in several dimensions. The question of the maritime borders of Timor-Leste and the interest in natural gas and oil have been the target of disputes in the region. The strategic dimension of the sea combines traditional cultural values and practices with the policies of a modern state, defining both its international relations and Timor-Leste\u2019s national identity. Education plays a fundamental role in the construction of collective understandings on the subject, since schools serve as important communication channels of ideas and state values. Thus, the aim of this paper is to understand the place of the Mar de Timor in Timor-Leste\u2019s geopolitics, culture and education. The study is framed by documents relating to maritime border treaties, as well as the analysis of the Timorese curriculum of general secondary education currently in force. This methodological option is based on the recognition that the curriculum is in itself a product of international co-operation in the process of state-building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resumo: <\/strong>Timor-Leste \u00e9 um dos mais novos Estados do s\u00e9culo XXI. Foi col\u00f4nia portuguesa, ocupada pela Indon\u00e9sia, palco de interven\u00e7\u00f5es das Na\u00e7\u00f5es Unidas e, desde sua restaura\u00e7\u00e3o da independ\u00eancia, passa pelo processo de constru\u00e7\u00e3o do Estado e da na\u00e7\u00e3o. O mar \u00e9 importante para Timor-Leste em v\u00e1rias dimens\u00f5es. A quest\u00e3o das fronteiras mar\u00edtimas do Timor-Leste e o interesse no g\u00e1s natural e no petr\u00f3leo t\u00eam sido alvo de disputas na regi\u00e3o. A dimens\u00e3o estrat\u00e9gica do mar combina valores e pr\u00e1ticas culturais tradicionais com pol\u00edticas de um Estado moderno, definindo tanto suas rela\u00e7\u00f5es internacionais quanto a identidade nacional do Timor-Leste. A educa\u00e7\u00e3o desempenha um papel fundamental na constru\u00e7\u00e3o de entendimentos coletivos sobre o assunto, j\u00e1 que as escolas servem como importantes canais de comunica\u00e7\u00e3o de ideias e valores do Estado. Assim, o objetivo deste artigo \u00e9 entender o lugar do Mar de Timor na geopol\u00edtica, na cultura e na educa\u00e7\u00e3o de Timor-Leste. O estudo \u00e9 enquadrado por documentos relativos a tratados de fronteira mar\u00edtima, bem como pela an\u00e1lise do curr\u00edculo timorense do ensino secund\u00e1rio geral atualmente em vigor. Essa op\u00e7\u00e3o metodol\u00f3gica baseia-se no reconhecimento de que o curr\u00edculo \u00e9, em si, um produto da coopera\u00e7\u00e3o internacional no processo de constru\u00e7\u00e3o do Estado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
