Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\nsignificance of \u2018identity\u2019 in doctoral studies is widely acknowledged.\nNevertheless, despite much research on what is involved in the process of\nidentification with\/as a researcher, very little attention has been devoted to\nunderstanding the effects of the internationalization of higher education in\npromoting feelings of belonging to a researcher community that goes beyond the\nnational space. This qualitative case study aims to understand whether and how\ndoctoral students in the Humanities and Social Sciences develop a \u2018European\u2019 or\n\u2018international\u2019 researcher identity during their doctoral studies. To address\nthis aim, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve home\nand international doctoral students from a Portuguese higher education\ninstitution. Results from thematic analysis suggest that although the dichotomy\n\u2018European\u2019\/\u2018international\u2019 was not always clear in participants\u2019 minds, those\nstudents who undertook mobility experiences or took part in international\nresearch networks or supervisory teams were more likely to regard themselves as\n\u2018international\u2019 or \u2018European\u2019 researchers. The implications of these findings\nfor doctoral programs in an era of internationalization are highlighted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
