Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCurricular\ninternships are increasingly seen as an effective strategy capable of\ncontributing to the objectives and targets of the sustainable development\nparadigm, both in its social, economic and institutional dimensions. This\npositive outlook is ingrained within the large bulk of existing research, which\nhas been focused on the discussion of positive outputs, such as the enhancement\nof graduates\u2032 competences (employability) and their work integration\n(employment). An important, albeit relatively unexplored, feature of the\nsustainable institutional politics of curricular internship management pertains\nto the assessment of its associated liabilities and tensions. This article\nseeks to address this challenge, by analyzing two interrelated dimensions.\nFirst, it seeks to understand the internship processes ranging from the\nplanning to the implementation stages. Second, it elicits the associated\nnegative aspects (the \u2018lunar side\u2019) of internships, allowing for an assessment\nof the features where there is room for improvement. Empirically, this article\ndraws on in-depth qualitative research. It presents the results of four focus\ngroups, voicing the perceptions of top management structures and students involving\nfirst cycle degrees in the areas of Marketing, Management, and Accounting from\nfour public Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)-three polytechnics\nand one university. Findings confirm the general positive outlook of\ninternships. Perceived negative perspectives report to both internal problems\n(such as the lack of institutional support and curricular design) and external\nproblems (e.g., the shortage of suitable internship placements), constituting\nbarriers towards sustainable institutional policies and strategies. Adaptive\nstrategies to overcome specific difficulties are highlighted (e.g.,\nestablishment of advisory committees with local businessmen). Finally,\nrecommendations regarding curricular internship management at HEIs are\ndelineated (e.g., investment in monitoring and evaluation strategies of\ninternships).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
