Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAntibiotics\nare notable weapons in fighting bacteria. Nowadays, however, the effectiveness\nof antibiotics is severely hindered by the increasing levels of antibiotic\nresistances in pathogenic bacterial populations, which can persist due to the\nselective pressure caused by antibiotic exposure. Arguably, the main cause of\nantibiotic resistances endurance in nature is antibiotic misuse, such as via\noverusing, inappropriate prescribing as well as the uncontrolled use in agriculture\nand livestock. There is also a lack of knowledge on appropriate antibiotic\nusage by the general public. Public scientific literacy and more research on\ntherapeutic practices are fundamental to tackle this problem. Here, we present\nSimulATe a software which allows the simulation of the effects of antibiotic\ntherapies on bacterial populations during human infections. This software can\nbe used to develop students\u2019 scientific literacy, using infections and\nantibiotic treatments as context to engage students in scientific practices,\nand discussions on antibiotic treatment onset and duration or on its use in\nimmunosuppressed or critically ill individuals. SimulATe\u2019s features also allow\nit to be used for research purposes allowing the simulation of real scenarios\nand exploration of their outcomes across the parameters\u2019 landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
